Worship Creator or Creature?

Happy Wednesday, Everyone. 😊 Do you worship the Creator or the creature? That questions seems easy enough to answer, but let’s take a deeper look.

This passage from Romans is referring to the fact that the Israelites continued to worship created things and not God – or not God alone. They would appear to get back to God worship and then stray again and again and again. They took on the worship of the nations they had conquered with God’s help. They made images and worshiped them. It was not good for them and God punished them by exiling them from the Promised Land. But even then, God was always there for them, protecting them, and keeping watch over them.

Unfortunately, we are the same as the Israelites. We don’t always worship only God. Sometimes, we get so taken with the creation that it becomes the main thing.

I will tell you that I believe God’s creation is beautiful. Especially when I am in places like Yellowstone, the Tetons, and Camp Aloma, it is easy to be tempted to worship them instead of God. But we also need to remember that He created all of this for us to enjoy – not to worship.

I love the outdoors. I love nature. I love the trees and flowers and all the critters, large and small. But I have to remember that they are not meant to be worshipped. They are meant to be protected, appreciated, and cared for, but not worshipped.

And it’s not just the beauty of creation that tempts us. It is the gifts that God has given us in the way of people, income, status, and a million other things. Sometimes, we forget where those things came from – we forget that God has blessed us with these gifts for our enjoyment and appreciation – not our worship.

I pray we remember that the next time we are tempted to worship the created rather than the Creator. Nothing in the created world is worthy of the praise, honor, and worship that is only due to God. He is the one who gave us everything.
