How Beautiful Are Your Feet?

Happy Wednesday, Everyone. 😊 What a question, right? How often do we think about our feet being beautiful? I like my feet when I get a pedicure done (Sutin is amazing) but I don’t much think about them any other time.

Feet are not usually the focal point of ads or marketing, unless people are promoting nail spas or self-care. It is important to take care of our feet – it’s hard to be mobile when they aren’t working. 😊 But I digress …

Feet were even more important in the times of Isaiah and Paul. They were the main means of going from one place to another. If a person had a bit more money, they would maybe be able to afford sandals – or maybe a donkey, horse, or chariot. But for the most part, it was their feet that took them where they needed to be.

And feet got really dirty. Think about running around in a muddy field and what your feet would look like afterwards. That is what feet would like like in those days after traveling through the rain on a dusty road. And if they weren’t muddy, they would be caked with dust because, well, that’s how the roads were back then.

Jesus even washed His disciples’ feet before He instituted the Lord’s Supper. He took the role of the lowest of the slaves and washed feet. That’s how it worked. When someone arrived at a destination, their feet were washed by the slave that held the lowest standing in the household.

But Isaiah and Paul have a totally different way of judging the beauty of our feet. And that hasn’t changed over these many thousand years. Feet were considered beautiful when they brought the good news. For Isaiah, it was specifically the news of peace and salvation. For Paul it was the good news of the Gospel. Either way, the feet of those who brought salvation news were beautiful. Not because of their physical appearance, but because of the message they carried.

So that begs the question for us, doesn’t it? How beautiful are our feet? Physically, they may not be much to look at and write home about. But when we turn into the messengers of peace, salvation, and the Gospel, they become beautiful, indeed.

If you are like me, that means that some days my feet are beautiful and shining with the message of salvation through Jesus Christ. There may be other days when – not so much – they may be crusted over with mud because the Gospel has not been at the top of my communication list.
