Our Three In One God

If you would like to view this on video, here is the link. :)

Happy Wednesday, Everyone. 😊 And Blessed Trinity to you, as well. My calendar shows that this last Sunday was Trinity Sunday. It is a day we set aside to ponder the mystery of our Three-in-One God.

Many of the passages for this particular Sunday of the church year are from the first few verses of Genesis or the recounting of the Baptism of Jesus. But God was leading me to something different. And there is was – a relating of all three members of the Trinity by Jesus Himself.

Jesus was dining with His disciples. In John’s Gospel, this was not the Passover meal, as in the other Gospels. Jesus knew that the time for Him to die for the sins of the world was near. He was teaching the disciples all that He could, knowing time was short.

The disciples were anxious about Jesus’ talk about going away. But He assures them that the Holy Spirit will not be able to come unless He goes back to Heaven to be with the Father.

Here, in plain terms, we have the Son talking about both the Father and the Holy Spirit. Once Jesus ascended, it was 10 days before the Holy Spirit made His Presence known – we celebrated that last week during Pentecost.

It is the Holy Spirit who creates and sustains our faith. It is the Father who created everything – each and every one of us and the universe in which we live. It is the Son (Jesus) who died for us on the Cross so that our sins could be forgiven and reconciliation with the Father made complete.

While this truly is a mystery of faith, we accept it on faith because the Scriptures are full of references (veiled and otherwise) to our Triune God.

It is tradition on Trinity Sunday to use the Athanasian Creed as the confession of faith. It is VERY long and many churches have stopped this practice. But I find it very interesting. It emphasizes the Triune nature of God. It also stresses the fact that Jesus is both 100% human and 100% God. Here’s a link for the Creed from the Book of Concord if you are interested in taking a look. https://thebookofconcord.org/three-universal-or-ecumenical-creeds/athanasian-creed/

Our God is, surely, a Three-in-One God. Each Person of the Trinity has a special role to fill, but all are God in substance. Without all of them, our faith would not be complete.

In our video for tomorrow, I have tried to explain the Trinity using water as an example. How have you tried to explain the Trinity to others?

Blessings and Love, 😊 Ceri
