Working as for the Lord

This is one of those passages that when God gave it to me, I said, “Hmmm, God, good thing You are leading this adventure.” 😊
It’s easy for us to pass off the responsibility of working as for the Lord to those who are in active ministry. Pastors, deaconesses, Sunday School teachers, etc., are the ones we instinctively believe are those equipped to fulfill this mission.
But we are called to be His disciples no matter where we find ourselves in our vocational life. If we are a secretary or a teacher or a mechanic or a member of the Armed Forces, we are to work in our position as though our immediate boss is Jesus. Paul tells us that we are serving the Lord Christ in all that we do. No matter where we are or what we are doing, we are to be the Hands and Face and Feet of our Savior.
It's scary when we think about “preaching” to others about our Jesus. But He calls us to do just that. In 1 Peter 2:9, we are told that we are a royal priesthood tasked with proclaiming the excellencies of Jesus.
It really isn’t rocket science. When we offer a hand to someone who is struggling in our workplace, we are working as for the Lord. When we console someone who has experienced a loss, we are working as for the Lord. When we do these things “to the least of these,” we are fulfilling the commandment Jesus made to love each other.
As Christians, we should be model employees. Imagine having Jesus as your boss. How would you behave at work? What would your work ethic look like? That’s what we should all be doing all the time in our places of employment. And that is what we should all be in our places of employment.
How do you model the work ethic of Jesus in your workplace? How do you treat others you don’t agree with as you move through your workday? If, as Paul says, we are serving the Lord where we work, how do you show the compassion and care that Jesus shows to everyone?
I pray we will all rethink our idea of the responsibility we all have to work as though working for the Lord and serving Jesus wherever our workplace happens to be.
Blessings, 😊 Ceri
